Toby Johnson has nearly 40 years' experience in management, communications and policy-making, especially in workers co-operatives and social enterprises.
A former national expert and auxiliary with the European Commission's Enterprise DG, he has a wide knowledge of the characteristics and problems of the social economy sector and SMEs throughout Europe, as well as a thorough understanding of European Commission policies and procedures.
Since 2002, Toby has worked mainly on the social economy theme within the European Social Fund. He was the European Commission’s expert on this theme during the EQUAL programme and since then has continued to support transnational networking in the social economy and inclusive entrepreneurship.
In September 2015 he became team leader of the ESF Transnational Platform 2014-2020. Under this contract AEIDL supports and animates 10 thematic networks among ESF Managing Authorities along with a website and database to facilitate transnational project work.
Toby has edited and written for numerous European Commission and external publications, chiefly in the enterprise, innovation, research and social affairs fields (e.g. ARIES, 3SE Newsletter, Social Agenda, SME Update, Euroabstracts, Innovation and Technology Transfer, RTD Info, Eureka News).
