How is democracy changing? How can citizens participate in this change? These were the central themes of the 3rd Annual Citizen Engagement and Deliberative Democracy Festival, organised by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre on 6-12 December.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted societal and policy challenges amid uncertainty. People need solutions that go beyond business-as-usual policy. Open to all, the Citizen Engagement and Deliberative Democracy Festival was the chance for people of diverse backgrounds to gather and tackle some of the pressing issues of our time.

Throughout the festival, a virtual exhibition showcased citizen engagement projects across Europe. The projects bring innovative approaches to citizen engagement, focus on ideas of deliberation or of co-creation, which can span art, science, and technology. AEIDL, through the TRANSFORM project, took part in this virtual exhibition and produced a video.

TRANSFORM (Territories as Responsive and Accountable Networks of S3 through new Forms of Open and Responsible decision-Making), in which AEIDL is a partner, aims to establish more open, transparent and democratic R&I ecosystems in Europe by integrating an RRI approach into the Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3).
