(29 August 2016) – According to a recent paper published by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, cohesion across the EU has made no progress for several years.

The crisis afflicting Social Europe that has been evident for several years continues unabated. Inequality within countries increased in most member states in 2014, especially in Germany.
Cohesion across the EU has made no progress, even if growth in the poorest countries has been somewhat above the EU average. The better off social strata benefit most from rather weak growth overall.
Social development remains dire in the Mediterranean countries, where the poorest strata are particularly hard hit by austerity policy.
