Setting the picture for rural entrepreneurship in areas facing depopulation

Jun 14, 2024 | News

Our Senior Expert on Rural and Territorial Development Serafin Pazos-Vidal was invited by the INTERREG Europe secretariat to provide the keynote speech to open the two day seminar on Entrepreneurship in rural areas with population decline held in Burgos (Spain) on 29th May.

Entrepreneurship is key for reviving rural areas facing population decline, aiming to boost local economies and support individual ventures. Challenges include limited resources, lack of entrepreneurial tradition, small labour markets, and distant education opportunities.

Yet, rural areas offer unique assets like natural resources and tight-knit communities.

Serafin provided an overview of the emerging EU policies to address the challenge of brain drain and talent development traps, and what it means for the EU policies post 2027 that will be tabled in the Spring of 2027. He was also part of a roundtable with the Joint Research Centre and the Spanish Government Directorate General on policies for the Demographic Challenge.

This workshop brought together best practices from all over Europe focused on promoting entrepreneurship in rural areas. Through interactive sessions participants collaborated in designing effective methods and set strategic objectives for fostering entrepreneurship. Key topics included policy developments, youth entrepreneurship, gender dimensions, and digital opportunities.
