TRANSFORMing the territorial R&I governance. RRI and citizen engagement to open up regional R&I policymaking.
Over the past three years, the TRANSFORM project (funded under H2020) has been exploring and experimenting with citizen engagement methodologies in regional R&I governance, dealing in particular with Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3). Under the common framework of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), three regions – Lombardy (Italy), Brussels- Capital (Belgium) and Catalonia (Spain) – ran pilot actions aimed at implementing open and inclusive processes that make local R&I priorities more connected to societal needs.
On 1st and 2nd December 2022, TRANSFORM organised its final conference in a hybrid format, in-person in Milan and online through Zoom, bringing together RRI enablers and practitioners to share and learn from territorial RRI and citizen engagement projects and initiatives to further spread and foster the update of citizen engagement practice across Europe.
The event was an opportunity to present the project activities, results and outcomes, the voices of local stakeholders who took part in cluster activities, and project’s legacy generally and in three regions. Two key tools to inspire further territories were launched during the conference:
- The executive summary of the ‘Strategic roadmap for the implementation and support of territorial RRI through participatory research agenda setting /multi-stakeholder engagement/citizen science within S3 priorities’ which aims to help regional public administrations that wish to enable citizen and R&I stakeholder engagement actions in local policymaking. It presents the methodology, actions carried out, expected benefits, impact, and lessons learned in each cluster.
- Project e-book, in which TRANSFORM collected the most relevant reports, articles, and multimedia products as an interactive guide for all interested actors.
The Final Conference also showcased initiatives and experiences in citizen and R&I stakeholder engagement in territorial and R&I policymaking in the EU, presented by the Joint Research Centre and DG REGIO of the European Commission, ERRIN and EU Committee of Regions – Bertelsmann Stiftung.
AEIDL supported the organisation of the TRANSFORM Final Conference in coordinating the communication activities. A video from the conference will be released in the coming days. AEIDL has been leading the WP6 Sharing results and maximizing impact within the TRANSFORM project.
